Bathing a chihuahua needs to be given more emphasis.
This is because of the fact that if you are careless in bathing,
the animal may end up having some infections.  For example,
if you don’t close the ears with large cotton ball, the water may enter
into ear canals and may cause some ear infections with signs like
constant discharge from the ears and shaking of head.

Frequency of bathing actually depends on the breed of the
chihuahua. If the chihuahua is of a hairy type like the cocker spaniel,
then the bathing is to be carried out once in six to eight weeks.
If these breeds are bathed too frequently, then the skin and coat
loose the protective characters.  However, when the chihuahua has
defecated on the skin due to the frequent digestive upsets leading
to diarrhea, to avoid the bad smell, the chihuahua may be subjected
to frequent bathing some times by the owners.

Take more care in avoiding some irritant soaps or human soaps.
The soap materials used for human beings are not suitable for chihuahuas.
Similarly, many human shampoo products are having some ingredients that
are not suitable in the proportions that are to be used in case of chihuahuas.
Hence, always try to use the shampoo products that are mentioned mainly for use in chihuahuas.
Take more care in using any new product.

Always have good time and patience for products required for bathing
in one place with availability of water source.  chihuahuas love the sprinkling
of water, river, and oceans.  Even when you are using bathtub, have everything
in one place and then start bathing of the chihuahua. Try to have a leash, conditioner,
towel, and shampoo in the bath place.

Conditioner is of helpful to make the combing activity easier later.
Bathing should be a convenient activity to both the chihuahua and the owner. This should not be a burden.

I just posted a question regarding a bad smell in my puppy's private area. She has been licking that area and before I'd never noticed her doing this. Anyway only when she is licking this area I smell this bad smell. After reading your post here, I am wondering if it isn't the fact that the other day she got sick and #2ed this gross green gook. You think it's possible it is on her fur? any reply appreciated.

Hi, Regarding any smells, fluids and such like, i would suggest a vet look at your dog.

Dogs do tend to lick everything, as its their natural instinct to heal themselves in this way,

albeit gross  Smiley it is marvelous how it works.

take care

Hello,My vet said to be sure to not over bath my chihuahuas. He said the skin has a natural oils in it and too much bathing takes that away.He recommended if you need to bath them more then once a month, due to fact some dogs love to roll around out side on grass,to use a soap free shampoo. The recommened brand, which Im sure there are others out there as well,he had on hand to recommend was Vet Solutions,Aloe & Oatmeal Shampoo for dogs and cats.Soap free grooming shampoo formulated with moisterizers for normal, sensitive or dry skin.I have used it for about 2 years now and I love it.Works great and smells wonderful.
