Hi guys, just wanted to throw this dilemma out to everyone and wondered how you felt about having to kennel your little chihuahua whilst on holiday or suchlike,  I personally think this particular breed of dog becomes very traumatized with this kind of action.

We as Chi owners know full well they are sensitive and timid, I was recently saddened by a story from a maid who works in our local kennels. She told me of a chi brought in for 2 WEEKS.. and the whole time spent cowering in the corner shaking looking very sad indeed,  I was just so shocked how People can decide to leave their dogs for so long in a unfamiliar surrounding.

Of course, in some cases it's inevitable that we must part with our Chihuahuas and most don't have the option to leave with family members or friends..

So, what can we do?
The first steps would be to make your Chihuahua feel as much at
home as possible:

1) Leave your Chi with it's favourite toy!

2) Make sure to tell the minder WHAT your Chi likes/dislikes
in regards to food/ noise etc!

3) Always leave your Chihuahua with a piece of clothing that
has your homely smell on. (maybe his fav blanket?)

Anyhow, I needed to vent this & anticipate your views..

regards,
Sarah

Awe, your story about the cowering sad Chi made my heart sad Sad.  I am very fortunate in having several friends that would gladly open their homes to my Belle.  I have in the past called on friends to take care of my Dane, so a Chi should be 10x easier to find a sitter for.  I have never really cared for the idea of leaving a dog in a kennel, it just seems so impersonal.   My mom had to leave her poodle at one for a few weeks once, and although I think they let her come in their home lots because they loved her, she still came home stinking like poo.

The other nice thing about Chi's as opposed to a Dane is that they are so much easier to take places, or sneak them in.  I can hardly put my Dane in my jacket to slip into a hotel lol.

Hi, yes it made me sad aswell, and of course its great when you are able to leave our little darlings with family/friends.

Sneaking them in places is also very tempting i know, i would do it too, if it wasnt for the yapping / barking coming from my bag / jacket  Grin

there are pet resorts popping up all over the place, and I hear dogs have webcams in the room where they are placed with their things and the owner can go online to see their pet, I Leo heard the dogs stay with dogs their own size and get lots of one on one attention

I would never leave my two chihuahuas at a kennel when I went away this past weekend it was the first time I've ever left my girls behind I took them to my MILs for the weekend (she was the breeder of my one lil girl) and i always take them to her house so its rather familiar.

But I am sure I looked like an overbearing parent i had their crates, their own dishes, lots of blankets, treats, food, toys.  I am sure after i left they all giggled about how I think my girls are my babies

I would always find someone to either come and check in on my dogs a few times a day while i was gone or I would leave them with someone I know and trust and in a place that my dogs have been to a few times so they are okay

Yeah, I have heard of that. My friend had to leave for a month due to work. He enrolled his dog in this pet resort in town. Whenever he's online from work, he's watching his dog online. I find it amusing when these things are created for dogs and owners.

This advice is the best I think.
